Changing Your Spark Plugs
Submitted by: Roy Nakano [rnakano@pacbell.net]
Volkswagen’s OEM spark plug for the Passat 1.8T is the triple-tipped Bosch F7-LTCR. Neuspeed recommends using the quadruple-tipped Beru Ultra-X (UCF56) plug. Whichever one you go with, changing spark plugs on the 1.8T is relatively simple. Here’s some instructions:

1. Wait for the engine to cool down.

2. Remove the black plastic engine cover by unscrewing the three black screws with a flat head screw driver.

3. Use an Allen wrench to unscrew the bolts holding the square direct ignition coils (four coils, two bolts per coil) and pull out the coils. The four coils are located near the left side of the engine.

4. Use a 5/8" spark plug wrench with a long neck to unscrew the spark plugs (counter-clockwise).

5. Install the new plugs (clockwise).

6. Install the other components in reverse order.
