B5 of the Month – May 2003
Adam Coughran (passatlover99)
Garden Grove, CA

Back in the summer of 1998, I was on a quest to find a unique car that everyone and their neighbor didn’t already have. I was racing radio-controlled cars professionally at the time and one day I noticed a dark blue sedan at the track. It was already lowered, tinted, and resting on its new wheels. My first thought was, “Wow! What the hell is that!?”

Once inside, I was talking with one of my race buddies who was also a professional racer (and a fully sponsored driver for his real car) and it turns out that the car was his. When I asked him what kind of car it was, he answered, “It’s a Volkswagen Passat. Kinda cool, huh?”

My friend then traded in his Windsor Blue ’98 for a ‘99 Candy White sedan that would shortly become the Wings West Passat with full graphics, ICE, etc. I begged him for a ride in his car and we were off. I was instantly amazed at how well the car rode even though it was lowered with big rims.

By this point, I was totally hooked and I simply had to get a Passat for myself. And soon thereafter, my quest was complete as I drove off the VW dealer’s lot in a 1995 Satin Silver GLS 1.8T with all the goodies.  And before long, mod madness ensued and my car morphed into a full-on show vehicle.

My car wouldn’t be what it is today without the help and friendship of Joe Delio at Wet Works Garage. I actually met Joe before he had his own business and we did a few small things to the car. Our friendship continued to grow and I trusted my car to him on numerous occasions as he really took it to the next level.

My car was one of the first Passat’s to have painted engine covers and color matched side panels. These two changes alone made a huge difference in the look of the car. But this would just be the tip of the iceberg. Between my imagination and Joe’s abilities, we transformed my stock Passat into a multiple show winner.

After many shows and group drives, the pinnacle of my car’s show career came in 2001 as it was entered in the 2001 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. This is the “super bowl” of car shows and my car was lucky enough to be entered as a feature vehicle for B-G Suspension. The experience was second to none! I had never seen another show like it and being a part of it was a great experience that I will never forget.

Aside from the SEMA show, I have had a great time at many SoCal GTG’s and have thoroughly enjoyed being a forum moderator here on ClubB5. I really cannot think of any other place on the internet that has such a fantastic sense of community.

I have made numerous friends over the last couple of years and would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their continued expertise, encouragement, and friendship: Joe Delio at Wet Works Garage, Mike Mankarious at Einszett North America, Aaron Harris at Hardcore Racing, Charlie Brown at Shelby Car Audio and Alarm, Chris Contreras, Al Patel, Edsel, Johnny M, Alison, all my friends from ClubB5, and most of all, thanks to my parents for putting up with my B5 passion.

Vehicle Sponsors: Wet Works Garage, Einszett North America, Axis/Xenex Wheels, B-G Suspension, Nitrous Express, Hardcore Racing, CEC, Modern Image Signworks, Shelby Car Audio and Alarm.
