B5 of the Month – June 2004
Julian Fang (julianfang)
Williamstown, MA USA

Having grown up in East LA, a world filled with civics, impalas, ricers, and low riders, I never thought that I would one day own a German machine, much less a Passat. When it came to cars, the only experience I had was driving my trusty 1988 Volvo 240DL. The car had great utility, but it was not exactly one that screamed fun. When it came time to buy a car, I didn’t really know where to start. Two things led me to decide that a Passat was what I wanted. I got an opportunity to test drive my friend’s 1997 Passat variant and fell in love the tiptronic, AWD, and heated seats. It was just a well built car that had all the great creature comforts. As I started doing more online research on Passats, I saw John Martinez’ Passat and that settled it for me. The Passat fit all the important criteria: affordable, rich with features, nice looking, and mod-able.

At first, I didn’t intend on modding the Passat much, but after joining ClubB5, it became a whole different story. As my girlfriend accurately sums it up, “It’s become your life. It never stops, this crazed madness!” What started as an NB sunglass holder has evolved into a body kit, the supercharger, and tons of other mods- many of which have been inspired by the many rides here on ClubB5 that have set the bar for creativity and style; the list is too long, but you know who you are.

With a V6 4-motion, you constantly hear, “There’s only so much you can mod.” That has made the challenge all the more fun. The overarching theme has consistently been to be subtle, yet unique. Granted, the words unique and subtle don’t necessarily go together, but as I’ve made more modifications to the car, I’ve tried to enhance the existing features of a great stock car. The body kit filled and followed the lines of the car, while the chrome pieces enhanced the stock chrome trim. The supercharger is the most unique modification, but even that is hidden under the stock engine cover.
It is a real honor to be chosen as June’s B5OTM and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those people who have played a role in helping me get the car to where it is at. Thanks to Anthony (vwpassatboy), Scott (D Zigner), Jimmy (stealthx32), and Justin (JROO-VW) for helping me through all the installations and ideas; James (jdubu81) for all the crazy ideas and support, my wallet will get its revenge; the V6 members and especially the 4-motion owners for their experience and suggestions. Last but not least, I would like to thank my wonderful girlfriend and my family for supporting me through all of my projects.

Finally thank you ClubB5, without the participation of all its members, we wouldn't have such a great community of car enthusiasts we have today.
