B5 of the Month – July 2003
Ville Maaronen (Ville)

Turku, Finland

In the spring of 2001, I decided that my Mk3 Golf Wagon had fulfilled its service of duty. I started to look for a bigger wagon mainly because my dog likes space! After setting my sights on the B5 variant I found the right one after a year of searching. It was beautiful – a 1998 VW Passat Comfortline Variant with a 1.8T cloaked in Elegant Green.

Before taking possession, I already knew most of the modifications that I was going to perform. Well, in my mind, I knew hot the Passat should really look. On my way home from the Volkswagen dealer, I picked up the phone and ordered a Dietrich RS4 front bumper, HID's, silver tail lights, a Hofele-Design trunk extension, a Votex rear apron, a Kamei rear spoiler, a Mattig grill, and clear side markers.

Of course the original side and bumber mouldings needed to be painted and I took that opportunity to do a little extra bodywork. I had to roll the fenders to make room for my new 18" Mille Miglia Porsche replica wheels. These were quickly replaced with 19" Mille Miglia Evo5 wheels and then they too were replaced with new 19" ATP 9 Razze wheels in the summer of 2003.
To get the car closer to the ground, I started out with Eibach springs and Koni shocks but they were replaced with KW Variante 2 Coilovers. During the past year some mods were done inside the car such as Golf R32 steering wheel, R32 gauges, Trendline interior, tinted windows, Audi A4 S-line shifter knob, and a few other goodies. The engine needed to be teased with a Wetterauer chip and Forge dump-valve and to get the transmission up-to-date I installed a B&M Short Shifter.

Modifying cars has always been my hobby and I'm probably never done any car that I’m currently driving. Being a VW mechanic, I try to do as much as possible by myself which is actually the fun part, isn’t it? Well, other than viewing the results at the end. I’m quite pleased with how my car has turned out.

It's nice to see that there are so many Passat enthusiasts out there to share ideas with and share our B5 passion. Thanks to ClubB5 for selecting my car as B5 of the Month – I’m truly honored!
