B5 of the Month – September 2004
Terrance Poon (HKB5variant)
Hong Kong

Until it was confirmed twice by a moderator, I could hardly believe that I, being such a small potato in a small Asian city, I could be chosen to be B5OTM.

I'm not going to spend paragraphs of texts to describe my mods. Anyone interested can see my mod list and pics here:

Actually a brand new 02 Audi A4 Avant was the car I considered buying in 2002. The idea was finally given up due to limited budget and because of the following:

One day, I parked my 94 Mazda Astina to buy some food near a second-hand car market. I was curious and went inside to have a look. I discovered a nice model year 2000 B5 wagon there at a very reasonable price. The cost was only one third of the price of a 02 Audi A4 Avant.  Next day, I did a test drive and bought it.

I love my B5 wagon more and more because it’s so rare in Hong Kong . Without an actual statistic figure, I believe there are only 3-5 B5 wagons running in Hong Kong .

In Hong Kong , Volkswagen is not as popular as Mercedes and BMW in the European car category. Japanese cars are still the majority. Almost no Passat owner here would think of modification, not even a set of alloy rims. This situation stems from the fact that tuning knowledge of B5s and the availability of B5 tuning parts is extremely limited here in Hong Kong . Therefore, I decided to learn and to search for B5 modification parts from overseas through the internet by myself. Finally, I made friends with some B5 modders in mainland China , Taiwan . The biggest harvest is the Club B5, which I think is a very informative forum providing tuning info.  Club B5 Members are friendly and helpful, like a family. The Slogan: "Another day, another mod" was best to describe my behavior. My fellow members are willing to share their experiences with me, giving me advice in tuning and help solving the problems that I encountered during the mod process. The previous B5OTM also proved that the B5, an executive sedan, could be modified to such an extraordinary level in both styling and performance.

We all know that car tuning is an expensive hobby. One day I saw in the forum that some CB5ers was buying some Chinese VW OE and aftermarket parts from a guy in Hong Kong at a very high price. I also share the experience of desiring to get rare mod parts that are difficult to find locally. That's why I fully unders tan d they have no choice but to pay for these high priced Chinese VW mod parts. I thought at that time:  'Why do CB5ers still have to suffer from high profit margin if I can help?  Should I do something for the Club where I have gained a lot? " I started selecting the best quality Chinese VW goodies to share with CB5 members at reasonably low prices. I do this to give something back to the Club.

My most impressive mods are the OE chrome window trims, which required replacement of both sides of the rear fix windows to complete, and the Skoda Superb mirror lights mod, which was helped by another Hong Kong CB5er, Bob by Chan, who is an electrical guy. I love VAG cars more and more since I have bought my B5.

I have even visited the VW main plant and the Autostadt in Wolfsburg in person. I'm sure my next car would still be a VAG car.

Last but not least, it's my most honorable achievement to be chosen as B5OTM.

Many thanks to those moderators and members who have advised me about mods and helped me in solving problems. I wouldn't be B5OTM without you and I will still need your support in the future.
