Project B5.5

Part III - In Car Entertainment, sponsored by:
Goal: To build a custom, showroom quality displayed system, yet to be able to have the convenience of the trunk and spare tire for everyday driving use.

The third part of project B5.5 consists of a complete mobile audio system upgrade. As nice of a stock system the monsoon system is, we just wanted more performance and functionality. The original idea was just to do a simple install of a new all-in-one video receiver, subs and amps for enhanced entertainment, but after getting together with Fred from Image Dynamics, that simple plan was thrown out the door. The major difference between our original plan and Fred's new plan was the actual display of the entire system. We were going to settle on a few screws into the back seat for the amplifiers and a box for the sub woofers since our goal was a moderate upgrade, but Fred donated a lot of his own free time to help us develop a showroom quality display for our new mobile audio system.
Products to be installed:
- Clarion VRX-935VD Receiver (DVD, CD, CD-R, VCD, MP3)
- Two 10" Image Dynamics ID-MAX sub woofers
- One pair of Image Dynamics Component speakers for the front
- One pair of Image Dynamics Coaxial speakers for the rear
- One  pair of Image Dynamics custom made horns
- Arc Audio 1400 watt amplifier for sub woofers
- Arc Audio 300 watt amplifier for speakers and horns
- One  X-Static Capacitor
- Wires and cables from Street Wires
- Custom built displays by Image Dynamics
Presentation Goal:
- The two 30 pound, 10" sub woofers will be sitting in a "tub" made out of fiber glass and they will be pointed downward into the trunk. The actual tub will be hanging down into the trunk from the rear deck. The inside of the tub and the magnets of the sub woofers will be viewable from within the car's cabin. The tub will be mounted onto a wooden frame that will be built from scratch and integrated into the rear deck. The support for the tub will be reinforced with fiber glass, glue and extra long screws. The tub will be painted the same color as the exterior of the car.
- The amplifiers and capacitor will be mounted onto a display structure that will be made out of fiber glass. This display will sit in the back of the trunk, up against the back seat of the vehicle.
- We will be pursuing a "wireless" setup of the amplifiers. This just means that no wires will be visible to observers. The wires will actually be ran through the back of the amplifiers rather than just plugging them into the pre-made connectors on the side.
- Neon lights in blue and red will help to illuminate and show-off the system at car shows. These colors were chosen in order to match the OEM dash illumination colors.
- All wires and cables will be hidden in the cabin of the vehicle. They will be run along side of the OEM wires and cables that run down each side of the vehicle.
- The horns that will be replacing the tweeters of the system will be mounted underneath the dash on each side of the vehicle.
Day 1 The first day consisted mostly of tearing down the vehicle of everything that was going to get in our way, but we did get a chance to start constructing a few of the "structures" that we were going to need for our display.

Day 2
Day two consisted mostly of constructing the fiberglass tub that the sub woofers will be mounted into. We also ran all of the speaker wire and applied the Dynamat. Dynamat is a tar-like material that absorbs certain sound waves, and is used to prevent rattling and echoes throughout the vehicle.
